The Power of Colour: Creating an Indoor Sanctuary with Citizens of Style
Colour is a wonderful tool that can be used to influence our moods, as well as revive the energy and atmosphere of a space. This spring, our focus is to create a sense of harmony within the home, to help you transition from working to unwinding with ease.
Our October collection heroes shades of peony and antique pink alongside earthy ochres, sandstone and butternut. With a focus on texture and natural fibres, the pieces aim to bring warmth and heart back into the home. Here, interior stylist, Tahnee Carroll and photographer, Lynden Foss of Citizens of Style showcase how to use colour and texture to achieve this.
Tahnee, what inspired you when creating this space?
“Nature can be so soothing, so I really wanted to create an earthy palette for this space and took notes from dusty pink sunsets when combining the colours.”
What is the best colour palette for creating a relaxing environment?
“Opt for more dusty, muted tones rather than bright, highly saturated colours, they are known to be stress-reducing and incredibly soothing.”
How do you bring warmth to stark bathroom settings?
“I love injecting pops of blush and peony shades into a bathroom, they are super effective colours for counteracting the harshness of the clean lines, tiles or stone. These shades also mimic the earthy tones we see in nature, especially when paired with ochres and sandstone shades.”
What elements are a must-have addition for home sanctuaries?
“I always try to incorporate natural elements into my spaces, whether it be plants, flowers or dried foliage, their organic shapes make for great sculptural elements but also serve a purpose, as nature has a calming effect. Candles are another big feature in relaxing spaces, a quality candle will give off a subtle scent even without being lit, it’s such a nice feeling walking into a room when it smells amazing!”
Must-have home decor for the new season?
“I am actually obsessed with the new Mair vases, they are the perfect way to add both texture (with the ribbed glass) and earthy colours to your space, and the Asla cushions are so beautiful too, the pom poms add a playful twist to your everyday soft furnishings.”
What are some simple ways to incorporate these new season colours into a space without changing too much of the existing interior?
“Subtle pinks and earthy shades are actually really easy to incorporate into existing colour palettes. Pink in particular, works so well with monochrome palettes, as it adds a soft feminine touch and blends effortlessly with earthy tones. Together, they mimic gorgeous sunset hues and go great with a variety of shades of green, even moving into the blues as you can see in the bathroom details. Blush is the new black, it can pretty much be worked into any space cohesively. It is a shade we are seeing throughout many interior trends, for example: Scandi, Mediterranean, Industrial, Rustic, Eclectic and Byron style interiors, the list goes on.”
A final piece of advice?
“The best way to inject a touch of pink into your space is to start small, a couple of cushions, a vase or two and a throw, dot these pieces throughout your space (not all in one spot!) and watch how easily it gives the whole home a fresh new look for spring, without feeling overly feminine.”
