The Art of Set Dressing with Stylist Jesse Arifien

A matching set can be one of the hardest working elements of your wardrobe, allowing you to layer, swap and coordinate pieces to suit the changing seasons.

Here, stylist Jesse Arifien shares her take on set dressing and simple ways to tap into the trend.

Set dressing creates a polished feel that doesn’t require too much time putting together. I love a coordinated look worn effortlessly such as pants with a matching shirt or a blazer in a loose cut and subtle hue. Applied to any occasion, place, or season, the trend minimises the risk of clashing tones while still maintaining an elevated look. —Jesse Arifien

What are some simple ways to tap into this trend?

Use the trend to play with different fabrics and colourways. Start with the occasion and build from there: pared-back tailored silhouettes for work meetings and punchier tones in interesting fabrics for a more formal look. Keep it minimal and pair coordinated elevated staples with one another for a look that is equal parts considered and cool.

How do accessories play into your looks?

As most of the styles are tailored, I have balanced them out with lighter and relaxed footwear to dial down the overall look. Tonal bags in black and white lend a laid-back elegance to the outfits with statement earrings, chunky necklaces and layered gold accents adding just the right amount of interest.

Sleek and simple, this pared-down tailored blazer and short set speaks to the minimalist in me. It’s the perfect approach to relaxed tailoring which feels especially chic and put-together with a platform sandal. To switch up the look from daytime to a more elevated look, simply pair the set with a boot or heel.

This matching set is ideal for warmer weather and this muted green tone has me in the mood for summer. My wardrobe doesn’t consist of many skirts, but I am drawn to the structure and bold proportions of this look. Sets are a great investment as you can also approach them as separates: Style the shirt with your favourite pair of denim jeans or add a simple tank top in fresh white to the skirt for a comfortable yet casual look.

Living by the beach, I live in relaxed tailoring and my wardrobe is filled with lightweight fabrics. There is more than one way to wear this versatile set, but left undone and layered with a crop in a lighter tone feels especially right for the season. Complete the look with an open toe sandal and a softly structured handbag.
