When it comes to setting the table, where do you begin?

Styling a table for me usually begins with one key element. This could be a recipe I’m longing to cook or a favourite flower that’s in season. I think it’s important to have something that ignites your passion and inspiration, then you always have a focal point to reference and refer to. What feeling are you trying to evoke for your guests? Answers can usually be found in this question.

Can you describe the setting you’ve styled?

This setting was inspired by family coming together—in my case, it’s special occasions like Christmas as we live in different cities. I wanted this table to feel warm, relaxed and lived in. A place where people could comfortably sit for hours, preparing a meal together and free from formal dinner party pressure. Having warm hues, mixed glassware, striped fabric and abundant fruit and vegetables evoke an effortless energy, full of fun and vitality.

What kind of occasion or spread is this type of dining suited to?

This setting is the epitome of summer. Christmas, New Year’s Eve, a birthday or any special event with loved ones on a beautiful balmy day. Add seafood, cold drinks and play some Bossa Nova and you’re in full swing.

For those who typically favour a more neutral palette, what are some simple ways to incorporate colour into the table?

I believe in investing in a beautiful set of white or neutral plates that can be used time and time again. They will always serve as a great base to style onto. Adding colour through linen, glassware and florals is the most simple way to then transform those base items you already own. Also, don’t forget the food—vibrancy should come from what you serve and is part of the overall styling of the table.

What are some other elements to consider when dining outdoors?

Dining outdoors is such a joy but is obviously dictated by the weather. If your space is in direct sunlight, consider the time of day you plan your get-together. Afternoon light is always heavenly. Have guests arrive around 5pm for an aperitivo as the sun goes down and leisurely move into dinner. Chargeable table lamps are a great investment for ambient lighting (and won’t blow out in the wind like candles). I also love to use fruit and vegetables to dress the table instead of flowers at times as they can be more durable in the heat and sunlight.
