A Fashion Editor's Style Diary for Event Season

Emma Kalfus is a freelance stylist, brand consultant and fashion editor at Vogue Australia. Her wardrobe is one that’s streamlined yet versatile, with no two days on set the same.

When it comes to occasion dressing, Emma opts for separates that she can mix and match to suit the change of mood, with a focus on timeless silhouettes and a subdued palette.

We recently spoke to Emma to gain a closer look at her event wardrobe and how she’s spending the summer ahead.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I am a freelance stylist, brand consultant and fashion editor at Vogue Australia. I also have an editorial platform, SIDE-NOTE, which I started with long-time friend and colleague Karla Clarke— it ensures my creative juices are always flowing and fills any spare second of free time I ever have available.

My day-to-day always differs but I’m usually prepping shoots or on set, liaising with brands and working on creative concepts or art direction in the pre and post-production phase of multiple projects.

I rarely wear colours this bold but summer and also ‘wedding’ season means I can’t do black all the time! I’ll still opt for block colour and this neckline really works for my body type.

Can you tell us a little about your event season wardrobe and what you’re drawn to?

I go to a lot of events, especially at this time of year. I always gravitate towards separates and mainly opt for trousers or long skirts with nice tops that I can interchange and freshen up. I love a cigarette pant or a wide leg, and black makes up around 70% of my wardrobe.

These split hem pants will definitely become a staple in my wardrobe—they work dressed up for events, for the office and pared back for weekends. I would style these for work with a crew neck tee, longline blazer and brogue.

These satin wide leg pants are a great alternative to a silk dress. For someone who doesn’t often wear dresses, I feel these easily fall into the category of event dressing and could be worn in so many different ways. I love this bodysuit, and will also look at investing in a silk or cotton shirt in a matching colour.

Finally, what are you most looking forward to this summer holiday season?

I’ll be spending Christmas staying at Mesa, a beautiful holiday home at Aldinga Beach on the South Australian coast. It’s such a special part of the world with stunning limestone cliffs, white sand and the clearest ocean. I’ll be with all the family relaxing, eating and swimming up a storm.

“The maxi skirt is definitely having its moment, and this one is flattering for so many shapes, ages and sizes.”
